Hello Guys,

Sorry for this late response but we are not monitoring this thread any more since the release of the final version. We just released a new version 6.5: http://www.digidna.net/diskaid

@Toby: We added an Apple Component version checker and auto installer in this release. You can now let DiskAid install the latest drivers for you. Thanks for your latest message, we are going to add these issues to our list.

@Chris: This problem has been fixed in version 6.4.9 but it means your Apple Component (Apple Application Support) is not installed properly. iTunes will not run and some features in DiskAid may not work. You should uninstall all Apple Components (Apple Bonjour, Apple Mobile Device Support, Apple Application support, iTunes) and then reinstall iTunes.

@John: Thanks a lot for your bug reports. We didn't see it before releasing 6.5, sorry about that. I will add all your reported bugs to our list for the next version.

Now I'm going to close this thread. For the next bug reports please open a support ticket so we can track the reported issues.

Thanks!

Just a quick followup for John Hawkins.  I don't work for DiskAid - I'm just a user.  I can report that I do have DiskAid 6.4.9 running on a dual-display system and don't have any problems dragging the window from screen to screen.  I'm running a 2560x1600 as my primary and a 1600x1200 in portrait (i.e. 1200x1600) as my secondary.  I'm running Windows 7 SP1 w/ full patches and the ATI 13.4 driver set.  I tested dragging the window back and forth, maximizing on both screens, and with my Start Bar moved to the top of the primary screen.  I also tried adjusting the position of the secondary screen relative to the primary screen, moving it vertically (since both screens are the same height and in the same position vertically, I normally have them adjusted to the same vertical position in virtual space) including with the secondary higher than the primary (a pathological case for some programs since it puts the top of the primary screen at a non-zero offset in virtual space), the secondary to the left of the primary instead of the right (a pathological case for other programs). etc.  I could not get DiskAid 6.4.9 to fail.  I suspect all of their screen draw is running through .NET Framework 4.0 (although I could be wrong).

I'm not saying you're not having the problems - you definitely are!  I'm just saying that there has to be something else going on that is causing an issue, and that it's going to be fun for you and DigiDNA to track that one down!  Given my experience with them, they'll be persistent enough if you're persistent enough to keep working with them (especially since you definitely appear to have the isolating and describing issues aptitude)!

Also, DigiDNA is definitely an Apple shop at heart - they developed 6.* first on the Mac and then ported the logic and look and feel of it to Windows.  Given the massive changes between 5.* and 6.*, I wouldn't be surprised if they just started 6.* for Windows from scratch using the Mac logic but writing the whole thing from scratch in C#.  Given that their probably developing in ObjC on MacOS, that means no code reuse between MacOS and Windows since ObjC and C# are not really on speaking terms (flashback to Marlon Brando's character in "A Dry White Season").  That also explains the DiskAid menu at the left - that's an OSX thing, and I agree it should probably be moved to conform to the Windows UX Guidelines.

Finally, another bug report for DigiDNA!  ;)

The "Operations" popup displays in front of all windows on the screen when it completes, even if there are other windows in front of the DiskAid window.  This is disconcerting!  :-)

Also, the way the window resize borders are implemented is suboptimal.  It's implemented with a completely transparent window border running all the way around the application and of the same width as a normal border.  This means that the target for resizing the window starts right at the edge of the visible window border and then proceeds outwards from there.  This is not intuitive at all, and leads the user to think the target is 1 pixel wide/high (since they can't see the full width of the target).  It makes corner resizing especially hard since the target is an invisible square and only 1 pixel of it is obvious.  I'd do one of two things - either restore the visibility of the border so that it looks like a normal Windows application, or else somehow move the target inboard so that it's at least part of the visible window.

Sorry, we've been forced to ditch DA 6.4.8 and revert to DA 5.4.8. Of course, when we now run 5.4.8 it tells us to upgrade to 6.4.8. You might want to remove that prompt until you debug DA6 in Windows.

In addition to the previous problems we reported (2 prior messages), we can't do necessary uploads to iPad. Whether using drag-drop or DA6's button, the vast majority of selected files do not get processed. Some get copied, most do not. We see no pattern. DA6 does the process much, much faster than DA5, which at first was a "wow" moment, until we realized it skipped many files.

We tried various quantities of files. The entire batch, which we can drag to DA5 without problems, is more than 3 thousand files (very slow but it succeeds). But dragging to DA6 just hundreds or even dozens always leaves many files uncopied. If there's a batch upload max, please state it.

Also, DA chokes on an unusual but legit file name that begins with ' (apostrophe). Each try to copy it to iPad, DA6 asks permission to overwrite existing file, but it never actually succeeds. So this happens every time.

Thinking this bug and error might be the cause of the failure to copy most files, we tried to rename the file in DA6, deleting the apostrophe. But then DA reported an error communicating with some process of the app that owns the Documents folder (app is "forScore"). Don't know why DA6 tried to do this, the same action in DA5 always worked, but each time we tried to rename in DA we got the error. So gave up on that.

So, we rename the file in Windows, so DA would not need to replace the existing iPad file but instead create a new one with more normal file name. But again (and again), DA simply does not copy all the files.

How many get copied...or not? Really hard to say because of the DA6 but where it changes all our file times to 7 hours later (probably using the simple GMT/Zulu time, ignoring the time zone offset). Then when we copy files, there's confusion all around about which is the "newest" version. We're pretty sure it's a time zone error in DA6 because when we look at the same files with DA5 they times match what we see in Windows.

And, we're not feeling a big need to use the WiFi feature, good thing because we usually could not get it to work. It connected at first. Then the iPad was removed from the area for a few hours. When returned, the iPad reconnected automatically to our local WiFi and worked for other purposes, but DA6 could no longer connect to it. Refresh didn't help.

I hope this feedback is useful.

More evidence that you are not writing to the Windows screen properly. I'm pretty sure you are using direct video calls to what you assume is the display, rather than to the portal provided by Windows that is the only valid place to send your screen.

Evidence:

1. When I drag DA6 to what Windows calls Display 1, the painting problems do not occur. But on Display 2 DA6 is a mess.

2. When I maximize DA6, even on Display 1, the top portion disappears under the Windows Start/Task bar. Because... mine is at the top of the screen. (This position is much better ergonomically, reduces necessary mouse and eye movements, so it is common practice in companies that know this. The default Windows menu bar was originally at the top, but was moved to the bottom in the mid-90s after Apple sued Microsoft). Therefore, in every version of Windows, the user can move this bar to top/bottom/left/right, and resized (to show additional rows of icons, or whatever the user wants). So it is critical that your app has Windows handle the proper positioning of your video output. Instead, you seem to be writing to the absolute screen instead of the Windows portal that automatically handles the location and size of the Start/Task bar.

3. I suspect you are not native Windows users, because your menu bar has things in odd locations ("odd" to a Windows user). Such as, "DiskAir" at far left when standard is for "File" to be there. The actions on your DiskAid menu are usually in "Help" or "About" menus at far right. Also, your View menu does not have the same options as your View button. Standard in Windows is to have EVERYTHING in the menu, with buttons providing alternate ways to do some of the same things. It's disconcerting to have two things labeled View with different contents and purposes.
4. Not a bug, but a question: Computer users are typically trained to not disconnect a device without first closing or ejecting or doing something that means "I'm about to disconnect the device...) DA doesn't have an action like this, which raises the question, is there a risk of unplugging at the wrong time? It would be very comforting to have a button right by the device name.

5. Another question: You allow caches to be emptied, but there's no explanation of the purpose or consequences.

6. Final question/suggestion: It's famously very difficult to put music on an iPad other than via iTunes, but that's the Worst Application Ever Created. Especially when the music was not acquired via iTunes and the user has no desire to trash their PC by putting their music into iTunes. (Again speaking from Windows users perspective; perhaps Mac users go along with everything Apple wants.). If it would be possible to use DA to copy music (MP3 files, etc) from a PC onto an iPad and have them recognized by the Music app, that would be very cool.

Trying "release" version 6.4.8, but it's mostly unusable. Unless there's a quick fix, I need to revert to DA5.

Problems:

1. Files copied to iPad via DA6 get their times jumped to 7 hours later (from PDT to GMT). DA6 does not use the system's time accurately.  I had been expecting DA6 to introduce synching as long-ago promised, since that's my primary need, but instead it makes synching more difficult by mangling the date-time.

2. Huge screen paint problems. Mostly I see a random mix of parts of DA6 and parts of what the screen was showing earlier in the day. Much of DA6 fails to show, instead showing part of something that was previously in the video buffer. For instance, trying to open Preferences, I get the box, but inside it is a chunk of what the screen saver was showing several minutes earlier. Or the browser I had open but since had closed. On the main DA6 screen, all kinds of elements come and go, repainting as the mouse is moved around. I haven't seen this type of video problem in a decade. (DA5  worked fine, as does every single other app on this PC, the PC has been rebooted multiple times, and Windows and all drivers are up to date.)

Note that I have a dual display system, each monitor managed by Windows. If you are not writing to Windows but instead trying to write to the video it will never work. This might be the source of your bug, because if I drag the DA box (About, Preferences, etc) to the other monitor it becomes readable. Dual monitors are VERY common among people I know and support, and certainly are a valid use of Windows.

3. Parts of DA6 seem to hang, though I can't be sure due to the screen problems. I've had to force it closed.

4. It would be very helpful to have DA6 remember where I was, as DA5 did, because the majority of things DA5 will do are of no interest yet I have to wade through them. My use of iPads is for specific apps (no photos, no music, no video, and DA is useful to avoid the iTunes bug when copying a large number of files. I have recommended DA to the makers of the various iPad apps I use that stumble with iTunes, and at least two of them now recommend DA to their customers.

1.  I think I get confused because Camera Roll isn't a stand alone app (as far as I can tell) - it's part of the Camera app.  Also, all the Camera Roll images show up in Photos.  For what it's worth, I have Beta 5 installed right now, and whenever I go into Photos, it crashes out in ntdll.dll at offset 0x0002e3be - you should have a number of those in your feed now!  Camera Roll also crashes, but it appears to be at different offsets.  For what it's worth, when I go into Photos on the iPhone and select Albums, there are entries for "Camera Roll", "Panoramas", and "Videos".  I wonder why the first doesn't show up in Photos in DiskAid?

2.  I suspect iOS putting WiFi to sleep is the biggest issue.

5  Sounds good, but it's not that high a priority!

7.  From the Jargon file, Mandelbug: A bug whose underlying causes are so complex and obscure as to make its behavior appear chaotic or even non-deterministic. This term implies that the speaker thinks it is a Bohr bug, rather than a heisenbug. See also schroedinbug.

I did notice that CPU utilization on the home page due to redraw seems to have been resolved!  Depending upon how nitpicking you want to be, you might investigate the icons on that home page for Camera Roll and Contacts.  They both seem to have jaggies on the border that the others don't have.  Purely cosmetic.

DiskAid 6 PC Windows Beta 5 has been released yesterday.   It fixes a crash at startup in Windows XP.

@Neila:  I come back to you quickly about your huge list of messages :)  It's true you are not in the "Teenage-girl crazy range" but this is 10 times more than what we have on our test devices.  It's really not easy to display 100'000 messages in a list. We could add a function "Load Earlier Messages" like the one in iOS.  I will make some tests and come back to you...

@ Toby:    Hahaha, funny, I knew the refund could let you think we are annoyed by all your reports but this is absolutely not the case :)    It's the first time we are running a beta and it's really great, it helps a lot.

1. About the differences between Camera Roll and Photos.   As you know on your iPhone you have two apps, one is Camera Roll and the second one is Photos.  Camera Roll contains all the photos shot by you and Photos contains synchronized albums from iTunes (Photos albums, Events, Faces etc.) and also two special categories Panoramas and Videos.  We wanted to reflect the apps installed on the device. Also due to technical reasons you can remove photos from the Camera Roll but not from Photos.  We are going to add a real photo sync feature in a future version.

2. 3. 8. 9. We are going to try to improve the Wi-Fi connection but I'm not sure if we can do better.  When the device is in sleep mode (lock and dark screen), the Wi-Fi chip is also in sleep mode and it's not easy to wakeup. The problem since iOS 6 is that if the 3G or 4G network is strong sometime iOS chooses to use it instead of Wi-Fi and most of the time this is why the wakeup doesn't work. I will look to the inconsistent status info such as Battery...

5. I will make sure to add a Apple Mobile device service version check for a next version and let you know when it's done.

6. We don't want to put too much informations in the operation drop down.

7. I'm not sure to understand... Can you provide me more explanations on this ?

I wish you a good week end :)

When I upload 3 large video files (700 Mb to 1,2 Gb) at the same time by dragging them from the Windows directory to the FileAppPro "location" in DiskAid, my iPad generated a message it was running out of storage space. The iPad shut down, and had some challenges to restart.

There was more storage space available on the iPad then what would be required to save the 3 files (more then 3 times the space required was available). After that I decided to upload the files one by one. Each time a file upload completed, DiskAid crashed.

I then checked on the iPad to see of each of the uploaded video files would play. They all did, except for one. After deleting that one file from the iPad, I could upload files from DiskAid to the iPad again without DiskAid crashing.

In summary:

It seems that when uploading multiple files at the same time, something goes wrong, causing the iPad to report running out of storage and shutting down. The shutting down most likely corrupted one of the uploaded files, which in turn causes subsequent uploads from DiskAid to FileAppPro to crash DiskAid.

Some comments/questions:

  1. What is the difference between "Camera Roll" and "Photos" in your UI?  I tend not to keep that many photos on my phone (I transfer them to my computer and then triage them and upload them into a personal Ruby on Rails photo and video archive site I developed), but it seems like Camera Roll shows me everything on the phone and Photos only shows me Panoramas and Videos, but not the "normal" photos.
  2. If a page (i.e. Storage, Camera Roll, Photos, etc.) times out for some reason on trying to communicate with the phone via WiFi and I then plug the phone in, it seems like sometimes I have to close and reopen DiskAid to get it to notice it via USB.
  3. I can't seem to completely pin down the behavior, but it seems to me that WiFi is less reliable if the phone is screen locked (and especially if the display is dark).
  4. Just got another crash (was on WiFi and switched to Photos tab).  This one was at 2013-10-16 10:12 AKDT (-0800).
  5. Do let me know when you address the iTunes vs. AMDS versioning so I know when to check if it's working (no hurry on this, but if you fix it and I don't know and it isn't working for me, I won't know to tell you!).
  6. It would be cool if the Operations drop down list included timestamps for each message.
  7. This spin through on WiFi has been stable throughout even though the phone has a dark display, so whatever the issue is (and it's just as easy for it to be on the iPhone's end as yours), it's a Mandelbug.
  8. If I plug the phone in while I'm on the main page (the one with the device name), I see the charge status and the lightning bolt.  When I unplug, the indicator in the tab list on the left switches from USB to WiFi, but the charge status goes blank.  If I close DiskAid and reopen it, I get charge status over WiFi.
  9. It seems like sometimes when I open DiskAid and the phone is on WiFi, it won't find the phone, but if I click on Storage it will go look for it and find it.  After it finds it, the main page (the device one) will have the charge status now, but it may take a minute or so for the indicator to show WiFi and the automatic backup to start.

Nota bene: My Windows computer isn't on WiFi - it has a wired connection.  My network topology looks something like this:

  • Linux box running Fedora 19 is my server (SMTP, HTTP/S, etc.) and router/firewall (it has two Ethernet ports).  The internal network port of the Linux box is hooked to a GB switch.  The Linux box also provides DHCP for the internal network.
  • My Windows 7 machine is hooked to the GB switch (and has a static IP address).
  • I have a WRT54GL running Tomato hooked to the GB switch providing wireless service as a WAP (it's not firewalling or routing - it's bridging the wireless and wired networks).  It isn't running DHCP, but simply lets the Linux box provide DHCP service via the bridge.

So the Windows machine is on the same network segment as the wireless network, it sees entries in the ARP table for the phone, etc.

Hi everyone,

DiskAid Beta 4 has been released. It should be the last beta before the final release.

I would like to thank all of you for your reports.  Most of the bugs and problems should be fixed and the only missing feature is the "Selection Rectangle" in the file browser.

I will respond tomorrow to all your messages individually, sorry for the delay ;)

Jerome - sorry for the delayed response (I saw it on Friday, but it's been a psycho busy 4 days and it's not letting up).  You didn't have to comp me a copy, but I won't say no!  I will say that my first thought before I saw your post was, "Great, I annoyed them enough that they decided they didn't want me as a customer!"  I'll do my best to keep providing feedback as I notice it!

Update:
So I have 114861 texts total, 89982 with one contact in particular (the one that always crashes me). And as I said before I believe the total size is about 1GB.

It's a lot of texts, but it's definitely not in teenage-girl crazy range, so I'm sort of surprised the program always takes so long to load them (the other sections seem to load pretty quickly)

Anyways I installed DiskAid on my work laptop (4gb of ram, and a faster processor, also running win7), and was marginally more successful than on my previous machines.

After (several) attempts, I was able to "Copy to PC" all of the messages from everyone, and from that one contact, in text form, and in even more attempts I was able to do the export csv form.
However some of the attempts for exporting to csv and pretty much all of the exporting to PDF attempts (not just on the one contact, but on my other, much less conversed with contacts), the whole process would run and show in the operations thing as completed, but then there would be no file, not anywhere. I tried several times, I got one PDF from a person whom I really don't have many messages with, all the other attempts just never showed. And usually a minute or two after the application would crash again.

It would also crash on me after loading the messages from that one contact I have a ton with when I started scroll. I would just scroll through and it would freeze and crash.

Good news is, most of the time after reopening diskaid it prompted me to send a crash report, so I did, so hopefully you have quite a few of those from me ;) (From both the scrolling and PDF issue)

Hi Jerome!

Thanks for responding!

To answer your questions:

  1. A lot. Haha is there some (easy) way I can find out the number? I'm not at home at the moment, I'll poke around and look for a way to find out when I do get home (maybe if DiskAid loads (it still takes forever every time) will it say in there? Assuming I can get the messages to load).
The second time I did all this (on another laptop, I'll get to that) I did notice a separate temporary file being made when diskaid was trying to read my messages. That file was almost 1GB in size before it disappeared and was called "SMS" not sure if that helps at all.
  2. Yes, of course. I did several reboots, several re-installs, etc. for both my laptop and reboots for my phone.
I then tried installing diskaid on my netbook (slightly newer computer, but less power). I had a error message show right after the install when I launched it (see the attached image). It pops up 3 times total, and then diskaid loads. (This was only on my netbook, i never got this on my laptop)
I then did the backup on this machine (it still took awhile, but I expected that). I could open up other areas, but messages still wouldn't load, even after waiting 30+ minutes.
(I also never registered this version, just tried to access my messages, didn't want to waste my 3 "uses" if I couldn't get it to work on this machine either)
I have one more laptop I can try it on - my work laptop, so I'll give that a go sometime later today or this weekend.

For reference, both my machines are up to date on regular windows updates, and both have the current version of itunes installed.

Some more info about my phone: it's jailbroken on iOS 6.1

In response to your other comments:

  • I knew it would take awhile to backup, from attempting to use the older version of diskaid. However I always ran into issues when trying to access and copy my messages. I was marginally successful sometimes with the old version if I selected a small chunk of messages and saved them individually, but it was such a tedious and long process I gave up, when I tried doing the whole list for that contact, it always froze. I haven't had the chance yet to try it with the beta.
  • Ha. I know. I've been trying to decide what new laptop to get for the past 2 years, I'm picky ; ). Currently thinking of getting a convertible like the new yoga 2 pro or the sony vaio flip. I'm not using vista still because I like it! Also just for reference, my little netbook is running Windows 7  home premium.
  • I'm starting to think the problem is maybe my phone and not the computer(s)? But there I run into a bigger problem because I wanted to extract all my messages from my phone before wiping them out completely =/. (Still also deciding if I want to upgrade to a 5s or jump ship to a nexus 5... yeah I'm an indecisive person.)

Thanks again for the feedback/comments though! I've been dying to save all of my messages somewhere so I can start clean on my phone (or a new phone), but I don't want to lose all my old conversations permanently (there's a lot of sentimental value there, I'm sort of a big sap!)

Hey Toby!

I just sent you a refund for your purchase but your license is still valid in our system :)

1. One license allows you to install DiskAid on 3 computers PC or Mac at home to the members of your family or at work for your own use.  So no problem for your mother :)

2. We are quiet confident with the Wi-Fi connection. Our tests are showing good stability and when it's not working usually the Apple Mobile Device service has a problem and in that case even in iTunes the "Wi-Fi Sync" is not working. Restarting it solves most of the problem.

I wish you a good week end and let you know when the next beta is released.  Thanks again for all your tests :)

Hi Neila!

Very good feedback even if you are not developer :)      I have few questions and comments.

Questions:

  • How many messages do you have on your iPhone?
  • Did you try to restart both your computer and your iPhone and give it an other try?

Comments:

  • DiskAid needs to backup you entire device to extract data such as Messages because with a non-jailborken iOS device there is no other way to access that kind of data. So if you have a 32 GB iPhone it is normal that the backup can take a while (30 to 40 min), especially with an old computer and OS. What seems to me weird is when the backup is finished the messages should be displayed in few seconds. It can freeze if you have a huge list of message but only for few seconds.  Also the next time you will load your messages should not take so long because the backup will be faster, the complete backup is only made the first time.
  • Windows Vista is a quiet old system now and it has been the worst system released by Microsoft so you should consider upgrading to Windows 7 or Windows 8, I'm pretty sure you will have less problems and better performances after the upgrade.
  • I don't know why DiskAid is not responsive on your computer but I noticed there is an abnormal CPU usage when DiskAid is opened, even if there is no tasks or operations running it takes 10% of CPU. I'll try to optimize for the next beta.

Thanks a lot your for your feedback, I'll et you know when the next beta is available.

Hi!

My registration key works now, so thanks for that!

Now on to my issue, I've had my iPhone 4 for almost 3 years (just sharing for reference), so I do think there is a big log of messages on there, not entirely sure how much.

On the previous version of DiskAid I always encountered the problem outlined here: http://support.digidna.net/entries/22457561-I-am-reviving-exception-of-type-system-OutOfMemoryException-was-thrown-error- (I tried doing this on 3 different computers and always got this issue)

Now I'm not like Toby here, I'm not a developer by any means, so here's a very detailed but watered down version of what I've done and what happens.

  • Installed the beta
  • Plugged my phone in, and did a backup through DiskAid
  • Trying to access my messages after the backup took about 30-40 minutes for my computer to load
  • Couldn't copy to PC because my license key didn't work (yet) so I closed out of the program
  • -Time passes, license key extended-
  • Open up the program and plug in my iPhone (I realize wifi is supposed to work, but given past issues I wanted to start with USB for now)
  • Clicked on messages, took my computer about 40 minutes to load them. The program went in and out of being frozen doing this (it also had the previous time)
  • When it finally loaded, I clicked on my contact whom I have by far the most message history with
  • Started loading, a few minutes in the program was frozen again, but I waited
  • 50ish minutes later it's still frozen so I start poking around doing other things
  • I think in this time frame it crashed on me? Or somehow closed itself? For awhile the window was stuck on my desktop, but not actually open in my menu bar

So I just now reopened it, and it's already "Not Responding" again. During the whole process the CPU usage never exceeds 50% and the memory usage hovers around 200k (but I've had other program run at way more, so I'm not convinced my laptop can't handle this.

I'm running Windows Vista 32 bit. 3gb ram, ~75gb free on my hard drive, processor is Intel Core2 Duo CPU  T5750 @2.00GHz

Like I said, I'm not developer, but I'm pretty quick with the update so if you need me to do anything in particular to get more information, just give me some instructions and I can probably figure it out! Just trying to help!

I am registered (I purchased when the Windows 6 Beta was released - the feature that pushed me over the edge was the WiFi support so I can stick my USB cable back over where I generally leave my phone instead of having it plugged into my computer).  It should be under toby@ovod-everett.org.  Out of curiosity, the licensing indicates I can install to 3 computers.  Does that mean I'm ethically and legally allowed to use my license on my Mother's computer as well?  I manage it for her and she has an iPad, but due to my personal objections to the QuickTime installer, I won't let iTunes on her machine either if I remain responsible for it.

4. See if you can spot them using the the aforementioned registration code.

5. I restarted Mobile Device service, and that didn't help, and then I restarted the phone, and that didn't help, but then I noticed that I had WiFi turned off on the phone, and after I turned it back on that did help.  That said, I'm 85% certain that WiFi was enabled when I was testing yesterday (I spent enough time testing and looking at the phone that I'm pretty certain I saw the WiFi symbol instead of the LTE symbol).  I remember when I turned WiFi off on the phone yesterday and it was fairly late in the day - it was when my ISP dropped Lower 48 connectivity, so I could get to their servers but not to the rest of the world, so I switched WiFi off on the phone so I could see if AT&T still had connectivity, and they did.  So it's possible that it was me, but it's more likely that it was either restarting AMDS or the phone that resolved it.  I'll keep an eye open and see if it happens again.

The only thanks I need for reports is knowing someone reads them!  The icing on the cake is when they get resolved!

I am a developer - if you do a web search on Toby Ovod-Everett, you'll find some snippets.  Long time Perl hacker, recently converted to Ruby.

Time to go make my wife coffee!

Thanks!

@ Toby:   I don't know how to thank you for all your reports.  Not sure if you already own a DiskAid license but if not let me know.   It would be useful for us to know the email address you used to register DiskAid so we can match your reports with the exact crash logs we are receiving on our server.

I checked your 4 comments and some of them are already fixed.

4. We are going to try to catch every exceptions even if it happens outside of the managed code. I already had few crash in ntdll.dll so I have the reports in windows event log.

5. Wi-Fi should work fine in all situations (file browsing, file transfer, itunes backup etc.). Sometime the Apple Mobile Device Service is erratic and you have to restart it. To do so go in DiskAid Preferences and click "Restart Mobile Device services" it solves most of the problems.

Many thanks :)

PS: Looks like you are software developer. What do you develop ?  I'm curious :)

A few more notes:

  1. Between "Color:" and "Region:" in the "Advanced Options & Infos" section, there is a field whose descriptor is missing (it just says ": #99989b").  Also, "Infos" should probably be "Info" ("information" is a mass noun and so doesn't pluralize).  I would also modify the "Export infos" button similarly.
  2. There are some cool redraw issues on that page (I'll call it the "home page" - the one for the iPhone as a whole).  If I scroll all the way to the bottom, some of the text for the icons in the middle of the page (i.e. Storage, Camera Roll, Photos, Music) gets mangled.  It appears only to really affect the top line of icons.  If I drag the scroll all the way to the top and keep the mouse down and move it side to side over the scroll bar area, I get a cool shimmer in the icon for Camera Roll.  Hmmm - it's doing it right now as I type.  Actually, it does it every second or so.  It looks like it sucks CPU as it does it - if I go to the Storage page, CPU utilization averages around 4% and jumps around from 0% to 6%.  If I go to the "home page", it averages around 12%, jumping as high as 15%.  Now that I've exited and reentered DiskAid, the shimmer in the Camera Roll icon has gone away, but the text mangling is still there, and the CPU utilization is still present.
  3. DiskAid doesn't remember window position or size when opening.
  4. I don't think the DiskAid crash reporter will report to you - no Exception.txt file is being created because the crash is happening outside of managed code in ntdll.dll.  It's possible the Windows crash reports will get sent via Microsoft's server (I'm never sure how that happens).  I know there's something built into DiskAid to report because the first time I opened Beta 3 it wanted to forward the Exception.txt file from my Beta 2 issue (I told it not to since that issue had been resolved).  But that dialog isn't popping up when I get Beta 3 to crash because it doesn't create the Exception.txt file.
  5. Wireless doesn't seem to be working right now, but I've played with this enough for now.  :-)

Program crashes  and won't start.  But I'm an unusual user.  Run Windows XP sp3 in a Virtual Box on Linux Mint.  Ran the install program.  Said I needed MS .Net.  I clicked yes and it downloaded and installed.

Rebooted Win XP- and tried to run.  Error.

Error box would not let me copy and paste.  But I tracked down error report in a txt file.  Here it is.

For some reason, I don't see my comment from last night.

I had multiple problems with Disk Aid 6 Beta on a Windows 7 machine connected to an iPad 4. Any time I tried to use Disk Aid with Comic Book Zeal, it crashed. If I looked in the Imported Comics folder? crash. If I copied two or more files into the iPad? Crash.

@Vic, Thanks for the response! But, I tried re-entering my registration key and I still get the same window saying my license isn't valid for the version? Or am I just being too impatient and it'll take a bit before it'll work because you just did it? ; )

@Neila Fitzgerald Thanks for reaching out and for your precious feedback - we have extended your license so that you can give the Beta a go - so please let us know how things go!!!

Hey Toby,

Thanks again for your excellent report :)

1. For the moment DiskAid doesn't check Apple Mobile Device version, only iTunes because most of our users have iTunes installed.  I will add a real Mobile Device check in a future version.

2. Backups are supposed to work in Wi-Fi but if this is the first time your device is backuped on your computer you should connect the USB cable otherwise it will take hours.  DiskAid needs to make a complete "iTunes backup" of the device to extract data such as Messages, Contacts, Notes etc.  When it fails do you receive an error message ?

3. Thanks to point us on the spelling error, we'll also add a tip tool to view the extra text.

4. We should receive crash logs via the crash reporter so hopefully we will find yours :)

Many thanks for your excellent testing :)

I'm having lots of problems with the new version with my wi-fi iPad 4. I'm connected via USB. Three times, while accessing the Comic Zeal program and copying files over from my OC, the program crashed. This was never a problem in the old version (which is why you guys got money out of me).

I have the same exact issue as Hjm34, is there a way to re-apply for an education license for the new version? I'm hoping so?

In v5.x I was never able to extract my text messages, the application would always freeze and crash (I think because I have a HUGE amount of texts stored on my phone), so I've been eagerly stalking my e-mail waiting for the new release, hoping it would work in the new awesome version =/.

It's working!  Took me a few attempts to get it to talk to the phone (the pairing had to be re-established), but I was successful.

A few notes:

  • Whenever it starts, it pops up a dialog indicating that it needs the latest iTunes version.  It was sort of correct the first time (I had Apple Application Support and Apple Mobile Device Support 64 installed from 11.1.0, so I went out and downloaded 11.1.1 and installed the files from that, only to discover that they were identical to those shipped with 11.1.1).  I can disable it (there's a "Don't show again" check box), but it would be really cool if it knew about updates to Apple Mobile Device Support and harassed me about that appropriately!
  • Is backup supposed to work via WiFi?  The first half a dozen times I tried it, it failed, but when I restarted DiskAid it seems like it started working.
  • The "Operations" drop down things reports "Backup of Toby's iPhone sucessfully proces..." when I do it using USB (note the missing "c" in "successfully" and that it doesn't display all of the text, but that there doesn't seem to be a way to view the extra text).  Note that Some of the buttons don't display all of the text as well (e.g.: "Add to Shortc...").  This is probably because I have a custom font size of 113% set.
  • Woo hoo - I got a crash out of it!  Unfortunately I was stupid and cut off the processing of the crash dump - I apologize, and if I get it to happen again I'll be more careful!  There we go, got it to crash again.  Let's see if I can pin that down.  Hmmm - can't get it to happen a third time.  It seems like it was clicking on "Voice Memos", "Photos", "Camera Roll", and then "Storage".  But it doesn't seem to be happening now.  Weird.  Find appended the crash information from the Application Event Log:

Faulting application name: DiskAid.exe, version: 6.4.2.0, time stamp: 0x52543d0f

That offset seems to be pretty stable, and I've managed to trigger a couple of different ways.

OK - that's it for now!

Jerome,

I checked at is states I am running a 64 bit operating system.  Could running ZoneAlarm in the background during installation be part of the issue?  I know with some products they say turn off your virus protection programs before installing.

Regards,

Steven

Thanks a lot for the info Steven. I guess you are running a Windows 7 32 bit and not 64 ?   If yes the bug should be fixed for the next beta tomorrow :)

Hey Steven!

Thanks a lot for your report. Do you have iTunes installed ?   If not the bug should be already fixed in the beta 3 coming tomorrow :)    Let me know if you have iTunes, it would mean there is an other problem and I will try to fix it.

Thanks :)

Hey Toby!

Many thanks for this new feedback. We should really test DiskAid without iTunes installed. I will make sure the next release will run without iTunes.

I let you know when it's out...

I've got good news and bad news.  The good news is that I uninstalled ".NET Framework 4 Extended" and rebooted before running the 6.4 Beta 2 installer and it didn't attempt to install it, so it does seem that the dependency has been removed (at least as far as the installer is concerned).  The other good news is that the failure at DiskAid.Helpers.iTunes.IsVersionSupported() is not showing up.  The bad news is I seem to have found another full-iTunes dependency:

It looks like you updated the title on the beta page (http://www.digidna.net/diskaid/download/pc-windows-beta) and the download link, but you might also update the line that says "DiskAid 6 Beta 1 for Windows – September 19, 2013".  Heading off to try it out!

Hey Toby!

We have just released a new Beta version. Now it uses .Net Client Profile and the crash should be also fixed...

There is still a bit of work on the file browse though :)

@Hjm34 the DiskAid 6 generation is a major update indeed and requires a license upgrade if you have a license for an earlier version only - I have taken care of that for you though and it should be working just fine for you now :)

I've just downloaded and installed the beta version of DiskAid 6. The website says "Registering a valid license purchase will unlock premium features" but when I enter my registration key a window pops up that says "DiskAid 5 is a major update and your DiskAid 5 license is not valid for this version". It goes on to give me a promo code to buy the new version or alternatively download the old one. I have the academic license. Will this not work for version 6? Does this mean I have to buy the new version to update when it is released? I've had to revert back to v5.48 because the beta won't let me access some installed apps like Goodreader, presumably because I can't register. I've attached a screen shot of the window that pops up. Thanks.

Thanks a million for making my reporting worthwhile!  It's a delight to file reports and know they are making it to the right ears and that they'll at least be investigated.  :-)

Hey Toby,

Thanks a lot for your excellent report. At the moment DiskAid needs .Net Framework 4 Extended because it uses the name space "System.Web.Script". But you're absolutely right, it would be better to use the Client Profile version especially for people on Windows 7 because they already have it installed by default.  We are going to try to avoid the use of System.Web.Script next week.   For the crash that you are experimenting, it happens because you don't have iTunes installed but I will check to the related function to fix the bug and allow people to use DiskAid without iTunes.

We will release a new beta version shortly :)

Thanks a million for your time

Hey Toby thank you for this report - we're currently looking at that (well in fact I handed it to our lead dev :)

DiskAid 6.4 crashes on opening for me.  It may be related to the fact that I don't have all of iTunes installed (it's a personal beef I have with Apple - I won't install QuickTime or allow it to be installed on any system for which I have responsibility).  I do have Apple Application Support 2.3.6 and Apple Mobile Device Support 7.0.0.117 installed.  Here's the sequence I followed today:

  • Log out as me (I never run as Admin), logged in as Admin
  • Uninstalled DiskAid 5.47, AMDS x64 6.1.0.13, and AAS 2.3.4 (the latter two shipped with iTunes 11.0.4 x64)
  • Installed AAS 2.3.6 and AMDS x64 7.0.0.117 (which shipped with iTunes 11.1.0 x64)
  • Installed DiskAid 6.4 Beta 1
  • Patched .NET Framework 4.0 Extended, rebooted, scanned, patched .NET Framework 4.0 Extended some more
  • Logged out as Admin and in as me
  • Watched DiskAid crash, tried using ProcMon to see if I could spot anything interesting, opened Exception.txt
  • Logged out as me and in as Admin and tried DiskAid just to see if it wanted to initialize anything - no luck
  • Logged out as Admin and in as me, then tried plugging my iPhone (iPhone 5, iOS 6.1.4) in to see if that might install newer drivers that might help
  • No luck, DiskAid still crashes

The Exception.txt file doesn't seem to be changing much (I kept a copy of the one created when I was monitoring it with Procmon) - the crash is:

Are there specific requirements in DiskAid 6.4 for ".NET Framework 4 Extended", as opposed to ".NET Framework 4 Client Profile".  The latter is what gets installed on Windows 7 machines by default (as far as I know).  The size difference isn't that large, but if you depend on the complete install for .NET 4, you're subjected users that don't have the Extended framework already installed to a 50 MB download for the framework followed by a ~120 MB download for 6 patches (which took around 21 minutes to install on my machine) followed by needing to scan for additional patches and then installing two more (which took around 5 mins on my machine).  If you have requirements for ASP.NET, "Advanced Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) functionality" (not sure what is in the Advanced that isn't in the stuff that comes with the Client Profile)", Oracle support, or MSBuild support, then by all means continued to specify Extended.  But if you don't, you might want to look at targeting Client Profile and updating the installer to reflect that.

Note that .NET 4.5 does away with this split, so users that have .NET 4.5 installed will get .NET 4.0 Extended automatically installed.  I suspect a lot of Windows 7 users don't have .NET 4.5 installed yet, though.

See http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/cc656912(v=vs.100).aspx and http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc656912.aspx for more information.

Thanks!
